Try cycling in the community - a first
Saturday, August 30th, 2008Mark Frost the Transport Planner for the London Borough of Hounslow is always full of new ideas and always stretching Cycle Experience to come up with new concepts for the promotion of cycling in the London context. From this Borough we have piloted both Bike Trains and Bike Clubs for schools and are now rolling these out across a number of schools. We transferred the Try Cycling to Work concept successfully into schools and now for the first time we are piloting a Try Cycling in the Community programme.
Centred on the Butts farm Community in Hounslow we are providing a Try Cycling programme for circa 50 people to include residents on the estate, the local school and businesses in the locality. The area is not well served by public transport and is seen as an ideal location to introduce such a programme for the benefit of both the individual (health and fitness) and the area itself in terms of sustainability and reducing the environmental pollution of cars. It has also been recently extensively traffic calmed, with the residential roads being reduced to a 20mph limit, further increasing the perceived safety for cyclists.
